Literature Text

A dove once flew
On the wings of inspiration;
Imagination and
Dedication.

Now it drowns
In the undertow of analysis;
Dissection and
Betrayal.

The chiseled statue
Of Olympian beauty
Now erodes
With the passing of time.

Too many have run their
Sweaty palms
Over its smooth surface.
Too many have

Numbered,
Tagged and
Catalogued every aspect
Of its existance.

Beauty succumbs to inspection
And the mightiest colossus
Falls
Under the scrutiny of
The beholders.

A once proud obelisk is
Torn asunder by the
Probing of its minute
Flaws.

Only the master knows;
The master creates.
The audience should enjoy,
Not criticize,
The work.

Who can pass judegement
On that which is not
On trial?

Who takes a complete
Puzzle
And reduces it to mere
Anatomy?

The joy is the building
And the viewing
Of such architecture.

A thought or cornerstone
Mis
Placed.

A pattern or design
Cut to make way for the purpose of beauty.

The mortar of creativity
Is borne with the word.
Microscopic and meiopic vision
Search for the putty,
Only to find it was
They
Who caused its deterioration.

A gift is not to be
Searched
For a price tag.
A gift is to be received and
Enjoyed.

Take this gift
And lay it upon
The mantlepiece.

Revel in its beauty.

Do not trample it.
Do not perforate it
With holes of
Scientific
Evaluation.

Let it live
A life
Of its own.

Do not force life into it.
Then, you will only kill it.

Do not betray it.
Do not betray me.
Do not betray yourself.
I wrote several pieces about poetry itself and this is another such poem.
I have always been of the belief that poetry is personal to both the writer and the reader. Sharing the same vision is not a prerequisite to enjoying the poetry.
It was after a disagreement with my university English professor that I wrote this. I was adamant in my interpretation of a particular poem and yet the textbook and professor's opinions did not agree with me.
Don't let anyone tell you how to write poetry or what one means. Enjoy the words in whatever way they strike you.
